Problem Statement
Based on our research and initial survey results, at least 90% of people believe that the amount of waste created by non-reusable plastic eating utensils is too much, and the effects of the waste are important to address and/or prevent/solve.
Individual Statement
The past two weeks of Part A have been very successful. In the first week we began discussing the problems we had discovered during our research and our surveys. During our discussion we brainstormed ways we could solve that problem in the time given to us, and if it would be something people want to see solved. We began meeting after-school using discord to discuss our gantt chart and what should be done tomorrow during class. By the weekend we had already begun creating and filling out our decision matrix resulting in us having three main ideas with a low score including reusable utensil, new Pringle can or treatment for osteoarthritis. For these three ideas we held a small survey of thirteen people to decide what should our main problem be, resulting in us working on a new reusable utensil. After finding our problem we began finding three sources to further justify our idea was a problem that needed solving. We then began further research of past and existing solutions while also creating a problem statement to present to our teacher. During our research Liam created a survey to determine if our problem was something people wanted to see solved. This resulted in 211 responses with 205 people agreeing with our problem, wanting to see it solved. The survey also included a question about the price range of our solution which would benefit our market research for Part B. The next four days of Part A we worked on our engineering note book and making sure we met the criteria and requirements to submit Part A. I am passionate about this project because in the summer, when working at my job we would often times have to clean outside and i would always find plastic utensils all over the floor. Another example of this would be plastic utensils scattered around dumpsters being picked up by animals, and especially at school with so many plastic utensils being used once and tossed. I am hoping to create something that will affect those around me and have an effect on the world no matter how small.
