Survey
- Mrs. Zienty stated that she liked my second concept for our final design, because it was compact, efficient and work well with fitting in a tray to guarantee know one stole a part of the utensil. She also stated there should be something in the middle to hold the two together as another to make sure neither part is stolen.
- Dr. Austin stated he liked the final design of our project, and believes the shape is compact and will work well for fitting into the hands of our consumers. He also stated this utensil can also apply to not only schools but towards people who go camping.
- Lanie Gladding stated the design looks fancy and ergonomically sound, while maintaining its effectiveness. She also stated it could be applied elsewhere besides schools.
- Myra Cropper stated that she liked the proportionality of our final design and how everything is able to fit into one utensil
- Philip Rittersbach stated our design was similar to a swiss army knife in which the design is able to hold all of the utensils at once, and that the idea/ design seemed well thought out.
- Mrs.Bernie stated she really liked the design because it looks like it would sit comfortable in the users hand, and isn't overcomplicated to use each individual utensil.
- Earl Detter stated our design is efficient in being a reusable utensil, and is very space effective when incorporating all three utensils, instead of compromising the spoon and fork utensil for having a spork and knife. He was however curious as to how the utensil would be washed either hand or machine.
- Brandon scheeler liked the shape of our final design stating it looks simple and looks like it is something that would feel comfortable in the users hands. He also like how each utensil was able to fit into one little shape, and that my group should also consider how sharp are we gonna make each utensil so it wont result in students harming one another.
- Carlos Alvarado stated the final design looked very interesting, and very efficient when holding all the utensils in case so that there will not be too many parts on the table when using it. He also stated how we liked the design wasn't extremely large and the caps add length when folded out to the utensil so it would fit nicely in your hands
- Leticia Juarez stated she liked the size of the utensil, in which it would not feel very long in someones hand. She also stated she agrees with the material that we are planning to use for the utensil, and believes this design is efficient in taking up a limited amount of space.
Survey Summary
After surveying ten people about our design, we came to the conclusion that everyone liked the design for our solution stating it looked efficient, believed all-in-one was a great idea, and that the size would be comfortable to hold. However, we did notice that some people did state we shouldn't limit our consumers to only those at schools but also look into other consumers such as people who go camping or having it as a travel utensil. Another statement we did notice was finding a way to make the utensil more secure so that parts could not be stolen or lost easily, and how will the utensil be washed.
Poster Walk
After receiving multiple responses on our final design we had noticed that many of our consumers commented on the fact the design had caps that could be removable which could result in parts that could be lost and unnecessary waste. So after some brainstorming we decided to redesign our utensil while maintaining the shape so that we could limit the amount of waste we were creating however making sure we still met the criteria we set for ourselves. This new design included a utensil with only one removable cap, and a cap that would remained attached to the utensil by a pinching mechanism. This mechanism would remain on the knife edge of the utensil always, and would need to be pinched and pushed down to use the utensil.
Decision Matrix
Annotated Final Design
Final Design description
After creating a decision matrix of our individual concepts we decided our final design would be my second concept. This concept consists of a utensil that would contain each utensil a student or consumer would need when eating lunch. This design can break into two separate parts which will consist of one half having a knife utensil and the other half containing the spoon and fork utensil, with caps that fit on the edge of the utensil which allows for the separate utensil to be longer and more comfortable in the student's hands. Once separated the caps could be removed and placed on the opposite end of the utensil making it longer. This utensil once fully closed would fit into a separate tray provided by the schools which would hold the utensil, and once returned to the lunch ladies, we would be checked to make sure half of the utensil was stolen. After presenting our idea on the poster walk, we noticed everyone had been mentioning the extra waste having two individual caps would produce. So after some brainstorming we decided we would redesign our solution so that it would maintain the same shape, while only having one removable cap. This led to our current final design which includes a removable cap for the fork end of the utensil, and a cap that can be pinched on the sides to be pushed down for the knife edge of the utensil. We chose this design so that it will reduce the maximum amount of parts the design contains and the pinch mechanism will allow for the knife edge to be enclosed and not be at the risk of sliding out and hurting our consumers hands when using the knife end of the utensil. For our utensil to be washed, the lunch ladies would simply need to divided the utensil into each individual part including the cap, fork/spoon utensil and knife utensil and place them on a rack to be washed. Each main body piece will contain small holes on the inside to allow for water to escape. This final design applies to our consumers needs by creating a efficient all in one utensil that is reusable, can fit into our consumers handles comfortably, and allows for our consumers to be able to cut and grab at the same time unlike other available utensils on the market. We have planned for this design to be a hybrid of Aluminum metal and maple wood, so that the utensil will be strong enough for our consumers too reuse for a long time.
